County fair likely won’t move to July

By Caroline Trowbridge - | Nov 30, 2005

It appears the Leavenworth County Fair won’t move to July.

The fair board had considered moving the fair — scheduled for the second week in August — to July in 2008 to avoid possible conflicts with the start of school.

In 2008, the fair is scheduled for Aug. 12 through 16.

In Tonganoxie, public school started on Aug. 16 this year.

During the past few months, fair board members sought input on whether to make the change to July.

“Two 4-H clubs and a dozen people called or sent an e-mail,” said David Todd, board president. “That was all the feedback we got. And the feedback was pretty much ‘leave it alone.'”

It’s possible, Todd said, that the fair board could revisit the issue at its Dec. 19 meeting — if board members hear from people who want to make a change.

The board meets at 7 p.m. at the Administration Building of the fairgrounds in Tonganoxie.

“Quite honestly, at this point, I think it’s probably going to stay right where it’s at, unless there’s just a horde of people who come to the December meeting,” Todd said.

In other news, Todd said, the board recently gained two new members. John Wagner and Harold Fevurly joined the board, replacing Mike Redford and Dennie Steffen, who resigned. These board members were elected for another term: Ron Ewert, Jim Gambrill, Mike Johnson, Mike McGraw, Bennie Phillips and Clint Shoemaker.

Todd was re-elected as president of the board. Other board members who were re-elected as officers: Mike Johnson, vice president; Jane Turner, secretary; and Jim Elder, treasurer.
