Young runners invade fairgrounds for annual cross country
Nearly 150 Tonganoxie elementary students competed in the annual youth cross country meet last week at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.
The meet usually is held on the school district’s 80 acres near Pleasant and Washington streets, but the meet moved to the fairgrounds because construction of a new middle school is taking place at that site.
Tonganoxie High coach Phil Williams debated postponing this year’s meet because of rain last week, but went ahead with the meet. He designed the course so runners stayed on pavement through most of the fairgrounds.
