By Shawn Linenberger - | Dec 15, 2006

The Tonganoxie High boys and girls teams both improved to 4-0 on the season after games Friday in Lansing.

The girls squad nearly blew a 19-point third-quarter lead, but held on for a 44-42 victory, while the boys outlasted LHS, 54-46, in the late game.

In the girls showdown, Tonganoxie led 25-13 at halftime and 35-16 with 3:05 left in the third. But the Lions went on an 18-4 run and cut the lead to five. Tonganoxie led, 44-41, when a foul was called in the final seconds against the Chieftains. LHS went to the line, but made one free throw as the Lions lost by two.

Ali Pistora led the Chieftains with 12, while Elizabeth Baska and Shannon Carlin each scored nine.

In the boys game, Tonganoxie led, 24-18, at halftime. For the game, LHS was 21-for-42 from the field, while THS was 19-for-41.

The key, however, was the free-throw line. Lansing was 0-for-7 from the line in the first half and just 2-for-13 for the game. Tonganoxie made 14 of 16 free throws, including 6-of-6 in the fourth.

Jeff Hughes led the team in scoring with 15, while Tyler Miles scored 13. Gabe Belobrajdic scored eight.

Tonganoxie will travel Tuesday to De Soto to take on the Wildcats in the final night of games before the new year.
