Obituary: Benjamin F. Douglas

Services for for Benjamin F. Douglas, 76, Leavenworth, were Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Davis Funeral in Leavenworth, with the Rev. William T. Nowlan officiating. Burial was in Mount Muncie Cemetery.

Mr. Douglas died Jan. 23, 2006, at his home. He was born Nov. 24, 1929, in Basehor, the son of Oscar Lee Douglas and Myrtle M. Zoll Douglas.

On Nov. 21, 1954, he married Donna M. Chartier. She died on July 6, 1999.

Mr. Douglas was baptized April 1, 1946, at Wallula Christian Church, by Rev. Doug Donovan in Wallula. He was a longtime member of the First Christian Church.

Mr. Douglas served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War, earning two bronze stars, a United Nations meritorious service medal and the Republic of Korea’s Order of Syngman Rhee.

He was retired from the U.S. Penitentiary for 26 years where he served as a custodial officer and counselor. After retirement he worked 14 years for Gronis Hardware and as a janitor for the Leavenworth public schools.

Survivors include a son, Andrew J. Douglas, Ypsilanti, Mich.; a daughter, Wanda J. Jeannin, Leavenworth; two brothers, Lee Z. Douglas, Tucson, Ariz., and James E. Douglas, Kansas City, Kan.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen L. Douglas.

The family suggests memorial contributions to First Christian Church, Leaven-worth Assistance Center or the M.S. Society.
