Rivalry week: Tonganoxie boys ready for Lansing
The Tonganoxie High boys basketball team is treating the final stretch of this season as a new season of sorts.
During that “second season,” the Chieftains hope to find their first victory of the year.
“We’ve kind of re-approached the final six games of the season,” THS coach David Walker said. “We’ve decided not to focus on what’s happened in the past. We’re heading into these last six games with a clear focus.
“We’re not lingering on the past. We’re looking at each of the games coming up, and I think we have some great opportunities.”
Tonganoxie traveled Tuesday to the Carbondale area for a game against Santa Fe Trail. Results from that game can be found online at www.tonganoxiemirror.com and in the Feb. 15 issue of The Mirror.
Friday, the Chieftains will get another shot at their arch-rival — the Lansing Lions.
Tonganoxie played in two close games against Lansing this season, but the Lions pulled away late in each game for the victory.
The Chieftains will look to avoid the season sweep with this meeting, set for about 7:30 p.m. at Phil Lobb Gymnasium.
“Anytime our kids get to play Lansing, they get excited,” Walker said. “Anytime they play in front of our fans. I think they’re the best fans in the league the way they support us.
“I think it should be another exciting night,” Walker said.
The Chieftains want a fresh start after last week’s loss to Bishop Ward. Tonganoxie trailed by 12 at half, and the deficit grew in the second half, thanks in large part to a 31-point third quarter for the Cyclones. Ward won, 87-49, in a game that had a continuous clock throughout much of the fourth quarter. The clock runs continuously as a mercy rule when one team leads by more than 30 in the second half.
Ward’s outside shooting helped the Cyclones establish a lead. Ward had eight three-pointers on the night, while THS had none. The Cyclones also capitalized on 30 turnovers as Bishop Ward scored 43 points off turnovers to Tonganoxie’s 13.
Ward’s one-two punch of Chris Wang and Brad Gard scored 30 and 28 points respectively.
Zeb Kissinger scored 13 for Tonganoxie, while Tyler Miles had 10. Jordan Herron scored eight in the loss, which dropped THS to 0-14.
