Volk named to all-area

Daniel Volk was Tonganoxie High’s lone player named to the Lawrence Journal-World’s all-area baseball team this summer.

Volk, a junior last spring for THS, was a first-team selection with eight other area students.

The outfielder batted .388 with 26 hits, 15 runs, 11 RBI and 10 stolen bases for THS.

Volk helped the Chieftains earn their first postseason victory since 2000 with an upset win against No. 2 seeded Sumner Academy in the Class 4A regional at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.

Eudora, which finished second at state behind Bishop Ward, landed eight players overall on the all-area squad.

And, EHS coach Dirk Kinney was named coach of the year.

Cardinal senior shortstop Kyle Brouhard was named player of the year.

Joining Brouhard and Volk as first-team selections were: Luke Abel, sr., Eudora, OF; Sean Blosser, sr., Perry-Lecompton, C; Luke Bones, sr., Ottawa, 3B; Kelson Boyer, soph., Eudora, P; Miles Cleveland, sr., Eudora, 2B; Chad Griffin, sr., Eudora, 1B; and Dustin Lister, sr., Perry-Lecompton, OF.

Second-team selections were: Mark Abel, sr., Eudora, OF; Brian Beatty, sr., Perry-Lecompton, INF; Michael Espinosa, sr., Ottawa, INF; Boone Heston, soph., OF; Cody Heston, sr., Oskaloosa, INF; Brock McGinnis, soph., Oskaloosa, INF; Kyle Rush, sr., Wellsville, OF; Rodney Spillman, sr., Eudora, C; and Matthew Wilbur, sr., Perry-Lecompton, P.

Honorable mention selections were: David Foltz, sr., Perry-Lecompton; Phil Greenlee, sr., Perry-Lecompton; Chad Krutz, Eudora, soph.; Clay Metzger, soph., Oskaloosa, Chase Moore, soph., Ottawa, Josh Weis, sr., Oskaloosa.
