Candidate forum, voting machine sessions set

By Staff Report - | Jun 21, 2006

Three Republican candidates for governor will participate in an upcoming forum.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Riverfront Community Center in Leavenworth. Beginning about 6:30 p.m., Leavenworth County Clerk Linda Scheer will have a new voting machine available for people to try out. The county’s new voting machines will be used for the first time in the Aug. 1 primary election, and Scheer is offering voters an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the new voting method.

The candidate forum is co-sponsored by Ernest Evans’ class on U.S. politics at Kansas City Kansas Community College and the Leavenworth County Republican Party.

These candidates are scheduled to speak and answer questions: Sen. Jim Barnett, Ken Canfield and former state House Speaker Robin Jennison.

In addition to Tuesday’s voting machine session, Scheer invites the public to try the new machines:

  • At 10 a.m. Saturday at Planters II, 200 Shawnee St., Leavenworth.
  • 6 p.m.-9 p.m. June 29 at Lansing Community Center in Lansing City Hall. This open house is sponsored by the Lansing Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Lions Club and Kiwanis Club.
