Worked continued last week on a new Basehor post office, under construction at the northeast corner of 155th and Elm streets. Postmaster Jo Rundus said she was pleased with the pace.

“The progress they’ve made has been awesome,” Rundus said. “We’ve got walls, a roof, and it’s all framed up.”

Rundus said she was excited to see the results of a lengthy process.

“It takes a long time to get anything done,” Rundus said. “We’ve been working on this project for over three years.”

Rundus anticipates an official opening in late spring or early summer. The 5,000-square-foot building will replace the current 1,000-square-foot post office, which is at 2636 N. 155th St.

Rapid growth in the Basehor community sparked the need for a new post office and the addition of a fourth route last year.

Meanwhile, plans for a new post office in Tonganoxie remain stalled.

Tonganoxie Postmaster Ron Hubbard said last week that he hadn’t received any recent information on plans to replace the city’s downtown post office at 526 E. Fourth.

“We’re still waiting on headquarters,” Hubbard said.

The U.S. Postal Service has a moratorium on all planned construction projects, including the one in Tonganoxie. Postal Service officials have selected a tract at Laming Road and Woodfield Drive, just north of the County Annex, for the new post office.

A public meeting will be held to discuss a proposed site for a new post office once the postal service lifts its moratorium.
