In connection with that incident on Nov. 12, Kirtis Shane Davenport, 25, was charged with two felonies, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and aggravated assault, as well as a misdemeanor charge of criminal damage to property.

In a conversation later with a police detective, Davenport admitted kicking in the door and having the gun. Basehor police Chief Terry Horner said Davenport, who has served six years in prison, told the detective he wouldn’t return to jail.

Last week, Davenport apparently picked up his last paycheck at a Kansas City, Kan., businesses, where he had worked until Nov. 6. Employees there tried to call 911, but were unsuccessful because of a problem with the emergency system in Kansas City, Kan., according to Detective Lloyd Martley.

“He slipped through our fingers because of a glitch in the system,” he said. ”… He got lucky on that one. Had he not, we would have had him, right then and there.”

According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, Davenport was sentenced in June 1998 in Wyandotte County on charges of inciting a riot, two counts of theft and three counts of auto burglary. Five months later, he was sentenced in other cases in Wyandotte County on auto burglary and theft charges. He escaped in February 2000 from Hutchinson Correctional Facility, but was found within days. He was sentenced in July 2004 on escape and theft charges, and was paroled in August 2004.
