By Staff | Oct 4, 2006

Tonganoxie High volleyball and cross country team members probably should pack a pillow and blanket for postseason play.

The Tonganoxie volleyball team will hit the road Oct. 21 for an hour-long drive to Holton for a Class 4A substate tournament.

The Chieftain cross country team, meanwhile, will have to travel an extra hour and a half for its regional in Marysville.

After hosting three straight 4A regionals, the Chieftains will travel to a city along U.S. Highway 36 for the second consecutive season. Last year, Tonganoxie was assigned to a regional in Hiawatha.

The volleyball team, which entering this week was 22-3 and ranked No. 4 in 4A, likely could be the No. 1 seed.

Atchison, Basehor-Linwood, Hiawatha, Royal Valley, Jeff West and Perry-Lecompton will join Holton and THS at the tournament.

Tonganoxie already has wins against BLHS, Perry-Lecompton and Holton.

The Chieftains defeated Basehor-Linwood and Perry-Lecompton in league play, while Tonganoxie knocked off Holton at the Rossville Invitational.

Other substate sites include Buhler, Concordia, Douglass, Anderson County, Girard, Goodland and Spring Hill.

As for the Tonganoxie cross country squad, the Chieftains will face a field that includes state-ranked squads Wamego and Clay Center and Kaw Valley League foe Perry-Lecompton. Other teams include Abilene, Santa Fe Trail, Chapman, Concordia, Council Grove, Hiawatha, Holton, Royal Valley, Jeff West and Topeka Hayden. The girls meet will start at 11 a.m., while the boys meet will begin at 11:30 a.m.

Other regional sites include El Dorado, Garnett and Larned.

THS will look to advance boys and girls teams to state in the same year for the second consecutive season.

The McLouth volleyball team will have a relatively short jaunt for postseason, some 40 miles to Wellsville for 3A substate action. Joining MHS and Wellsville will be Pleasant Ridge, Jayhawk Linn, Oskaloosa, Kansas City Christian, Central Heights and Jefferson County North.

Belleville, Eureka, Galena, Garden Plain, Hillsboro, Scott City and Seneca-Nemaha Valley also are regional sites.

The Bulldog cross country squad will travel nearly two hours to the Leonardville Golf Course, which is north of Manhattan. Riley County is the host team there, where these schools also will compete Maur Hill-Mount Academy, Belleville, Pleasant Ridge, Mission Valley, Effingham, Horton, Oskaloosa, Rossville, Sabetha, Seneca-Nemaha Valley, Silver Lake, Rock Creek and Jefferson County North.

The girls meet is set for 11:30 a.m.; the boys for 12:30 p.m.
