Governor

(Garden City Telegram) English programs hope for funding: While stumping for votes this election cycle, gubernatorial candidate Jim Barnett and Gov. Kathleen Sebelius both have said the state needs English declared as the official language. But in classes teaching English to immigrants in Kansas, directors agree that political rhetoric is meaningless unless new funding is added to cut their waiting lists.

(Garden City Telegram) Barnett’s hometown Emporia mixed on candidate: In this Flint Hills community, where many residents know the candidate as “Dr. Barnett,” opinions were consistently mixed on the race for the governor’s seat, which culminates at the polls Nov. 7.

Attorney General

(Kansas Public Radio) New Kline ad features allegation that was dismissed: Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline unveiled a new TV ad over the weekend attacking Democrat Paul Morrison over a sexual harassment complaint that was filed against him more than 15 years ago and dismissed.

(Garden City Telegram) Morrison earns strong support of women: How a contentious state attorney general’s race plays with women voters in the campaign’s closing weeks could decide its outcome, recent poll results suggest. Yet Republicans and Democrats watching the race disagree on whether a difference in the voting preferences of men and women really might affect a contest between Democratic challenger Paul Morrison and Republican Attorney General Phill Kline.

(AP) Kline battered by bad news: Phill Kline has just seen as rough a six-week period as any statewide candidate in Kansas in recent memory. The bad times for Kline began with the anonymous leak in September of an internal memo he wrote outlining an effort to make the most of his support among conservative Christians. Its blunt directions to staff included making sure pastors bring “money people” to post-worship events.

2nd District Congress

(Topeka Capital-Journal) Ryun story on Foley changes: Worried about winning a sixth term in Congress, U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun said this month he didn’t know until recently that he lived across the street from disgraced Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla. — whom many Republicans are trying to keep at a safe distance. Then, when faced with questions about how that could be the case considering Ryun in May hosted a fundraiser alongside Foley on D Street in Washington, D.C., Ryun’s campaign said the events weren’t jointly planned. However, neither of those statements was completely accurate, Ryun’s campaign admitted last week.

Kansas Board of Education

(Hutchinson News) Education Alliance names board members: Kansas Alliance for Education recently named Hutchinson residents Roonie Sellers and Frank Alexander, and Newton resident Sue Ice to serve on the nonpartisan group’s advisory board. The grassroots organization formed in November 2005 to promote the election of Kansas State Board of Education candidates who support quality education across the state. Members say they believe the current state board members fail to provide quality educational opportunities.
