McLouth runners receive taste of state championship course

By Shawn Linenberger - | Sep 13, 2006

McLouth High runners took a stab at the state cross country course Saturday.

Wamego held its annual invitational last weekend, but the city’s golf course also is the home to the state cross country championships in late October for Classes 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A.

The Bulldogs didn’t medal any individual runners at the meet, but Liz Turner was the top finisher overall for MHS. She placed 41st in the girls race with a time of 18 minutes, 55 seconds. Aliaa Ghaddar finished in 19:37, good for 56th, and Gelia Gardner placed 60th with a 19:53 time.

In the boys race, Ryan Saxton placed 50th with a 20:35 time, while John Trieu placed 66th (21:25) and Charlie Turner 78th (22:01).

“Almost everyone either stayed consistent with their times from last week or improved,” MHS coach Ben Cressler said. “We didn’t bring home any medals, but it was a great experience for them and they saw what big meets are all about. They all finished strong and tried not to let anyone get them at the end. All in all, I was happy with their effort.
