(AP) Illegal immigration debate takes center stage in governor’s race: Illegal immigration has become the hottest issue in the governor’s race, and Democratic incumbent Kathleen Sebelius argued Monday that Republican challenger Jim Barnett is misleading voters. Sebelius said the federal government must adopt a comprehensive border security plan to stem the tide of illegal immigrants from Mexico, while the state could – and is – cracking down on businesses that knowingly hire such immigrants. Barnett spokesman Rodger Woods said states can make themselves less attractive to illegal immigrants and questioned Sebelius’ commitment to punishing errant businesses.

(Hutch News) Kearny Co. lawyer backs Morrison for state AG: Former Kansas Republican Party Chairman Dennis Jones of Lakin is urging friends to vote for Democrat Paul Morrison for Kansas attorney general. Morrison switched his political allegiance from Republican to Democrat to challenge Republican Attorney General Phill Kline’s re-election bid in November. Jones is the Kearny County attorney and led the Kansas GOP from 2003 to 2005. “I will always be a Kansas Republican – and proud of it!” Jones wrote in a letter Monday addressed to “Fellow Kansans.”

(AP) Kline launches Web site to criticize opponent over 2000 law: Attorney General Phill Kline added a new twist to campaigning by launching a separate Web site devoted to criticizing Democratic challenger Paul Morrison for his role in a 2000 law shortening the time released inmates were under state supervision. Dubbed “Paul’s Policy” and launched Monday, it isn’t tied to the Kline campaign Web site. At the top of the page is a photograph of the Johnson County district attorney in front of some 40 mug shots. At the bottom in small type is the notation that it’s paid for by the Kline campaign. It also features four photos of men identified as having been returned to prison. The photos link to the Department of Corrections Web site showing their criminal histories. Viewers also can check on individuals by county or specific crime. “That Web site is full of deliberate lies and Phill Kline knows it,” said Morrison campaign manager Mark Simpson.
