David and Laurie Vancer, who live in the old Mohan farm house near the top of the hill between the Knapps and the Schwinns, have lived there about 12 years. They have two daughters, Allison and Jennifer, who live in Lawrence. They have five grandchildren. They flew to Ft. Benning, Ga., during the second week of August and attended the 2007 Army Ranger Rendezvous. Our ranger son (Sgt. Michael Vancer) recently returned from his fourth deployment and upon graduating from Jumpmasters School was able to join us for the festivities. Ranger Rendezvous marches the Regimental Change of Command, but also combines the three ranger units for a friendly competition that involves sporting events, timed obstacle courses and combative fighting. The event kicked off with a mass tactical jump, which involved almost 1,000 airborne/ranger soldiers parachuting onto a landing zone within a 20-minute time frame. We also had the opportunity to meet a few ranger veterans (mostly from the Vietnam era), who shared their own combat experiences with the younger colleagues. The bond these rangers shared was a powerful experience to witness. God bless all your soldiers and their loved ones! Michael and his wife, Kristen, have lived in Savanah, Ga., a few years where he is assigned to Hunter Army Airfield.
