THS wrestling defeats Trail for first time in school history

By Eric Sorrentino - | Dec 20, 2007

Thursday represented a historic day for the Tonganoxie High wrestling team.

Tonganoxie defeated Santa Fe Trail, 36-33, on the road. It represented the first dual victory against Santa Fe Trail in THS school history, according to coach Jeremy Goebel.

“It’s a great building block for our kids, our program and our season,” said Goebel, who’s in his sixth year. “We have a special team here.”

To put Santa Fe Trail’s recent dominance against Tonganoxie into perspective, the Chargers defeated the Chieftains three years ago, 84-0. In other words, THS didn’t have anyone from any weight class defeat a SFT wrestler.

Thankfully for THS, it’s the 2007-2008 season.

Wrestlers like A.J. DeMaranville, Steve Davis, Matt Ditty and Justin Crotty stepped up for the Chieftains and notched six-point victories with pins.

DeMaranville’s pin was huge and put THS ahead, 36-30, with one heavyweight match remaining.

Senior Cameron Adcox lost his final match, but his opponent gained only three points, securing the THS victory.

“Cam wrestled tough,” Goebel said. “He’s a smart wrester and he wasn’t going to get into a position of getting pinned.”

It’s a good thing Adcox didn’t get pinned. That would have tied the match at 36. The tiebreaker would have gone to the Chargers, since they had more pins than the Chieftains.

Tonganoxie lost its other dual Thursday against Class 5A Shawnee Heights, 51-21.

Tonganoxie will wrestle again Saturday, when it makes up the Pleasant Ridge Tournament that was canceled last weekend because of inclement weather. The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. at Pleasant Ridge High School.
