Chieftains to meet Lions again

By Shawn Linenberger - | Feb 7, 2007

The Tonganoxie High girls basketball team will look to sweep Lansing on Friday in the THS gymnasium.

Tonganoxie already has defeated LHS twice this season — once in Lansing and once in Tonganoxie in the Tonganoxie Invitational championship.

Both times, the Lions weren’t pushovers for the Chieftains. Lansing nearly erased an 18-point second-half Tonganoxie lead in a 44-42 loss in Lansing.

And in the tournament finals, the Lions battled back and held a brief lead in the fourth quarter before the Chieftains established a late run in a 50-37 win.

Tonganoxie entered play this week with a 14-0 record, while Lansing is 6-8.

THS played Tuesday in a battle for the Kaw Valley League crown. Tonganoxie was 8-0 in KVL play entering the game, while SFT was 9-0 in league games. The Chargers also were 11-3 overall.

The game did not meet The Mirror’s deadline, but an Internet report on the game may be found on The Mirror’s Web site, www.tonganoxiemirror.com.

Last week, the Chieftains had just one game, a home date Jan. 30 with Immaculata.

Tonganoxie opened the game with a 14-6 advantage after the first quarter and breezed to victory. THS held a 37-9 halftime lead and increased that lead in the second half in a 66-28 win.

Ali Pistora led the Chieftains in scoring with 13, while Elizabeth Baska scored 11.

Overall, 10 THS players scored against the Raiders.

Tonganoxie outrebounded Immaculata, 52-19, and held a 17-2 advantage in second-chance points. The Chieftains also had 23 points from their bench, while the Raiders had just four.

From the field, Tonganoxie shot 45.2 percent (28-for-62), while Immaculata finished with a 21.4 shooting percentage (9-for-42).
