Late score dooms THS boys team

By Shawn Linenberger - | Feb 14, 2007

The Tonganoxie High gymnasium has become the site for Curtis Beall’s ongoing highlight reel.

The Lansing sophomore made a three-pointer as time expired during the Tonganoxie Invitational last month in a one-point victory against Silver Lake.

Unfortunately for the hometown Chieftains, Beall did the same Friday, again in the THS gymnasium.

Tonganoxie led, 41-40, with less than 10 seconds left in the game. But with seven seconds left, Beall put up a shot that rattled in.

Tonganoxie’s Zeb Kissinger tried some of his own last-second heroics, but Kissinger’s turnaround three-point attempt sailed past the bucket and Lansing held on for the 42-41 victory.

Jeff Hughes led Tonganoxie in scoring with 18, while Gabe Belobrajdic was second-leading scorer with eight and Austin Smith third with seven for the Chieftains.

Tonganoxie was scheduled to play Piper on Tuesday, but inclement weather postponed the game.

It has been rescheduled for Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The game will be the Sunflower Broadband Channel 6 game of the week. The contest may be seen on a tape-delay basis on Channel 6.

THS takes down SFT in OT

Tonganoxie can relate to Santa Fe Trail.

SFT hadn’t won a game entering the Feb. 6 game in rural Carbondale against THS.

Tonganoxie was in the same boat last year before winning its final two regular-season games.

Last week, the Chieftains nearly became the Charger squad’s first victims.

THS fell behind in the first quarter, 15-8, and still trailed at halftime, 22-18.

Tonganoxie pulled ahead in the third quarter, but Santa Fe Trail took the lead late in the fourth quarter before Tonganoxie responded and forced an overtime.

In the extra period, the Chieftains took control and escaped the SFT gymnasium with a 60-54 win.

Junior Gabe Belobrajdic led the Chieftains with a game-high 28, while Jeff Hughes scored 14.

Caleb Bahner led the Chargers with 19, while Ryan Fike chipped in 12.

Santa Fe Trail dropped to 0-15 overall and 0-8 in the Kaw Valley League.
