Post 41 victorious in first day of league tournament
Jace Waters pitched a complete game Tuesday night in Tonganoxie Post 41’s 8-2 victory against the Leavenworth Legends in the first round of the Byron H. Mehl Post 23 League Tournament.
Post 41 will play Wednesday night in its second game of the double elimination tournament at 8 p.m. at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.
Waters displayed complete command from the mound against the Legends. He struck out 11, walked three and only gave up two earned runs.
“I just like pitching off our mound more than anything,” Waters said.
Waters, originally part of the Tonganoxie Chieftains USSSA summer league team, was called into action when Post 41 coach Pat Bailey lost several of his key pitchers to injuries.
“He just told me I could play in eight more baseball games, so I thought I might as well play them,” Waters said.
Post 41 jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tonganoxie scored five in the bottom of the frame to give Waters even more cushion and seal the victory.
James Bailey doubled over the Legends’ centerfielder to score the first run of the frame. Other highlights included an RBI single by Logan Forbis and an RBI triple by Ryan Stockman.
Tonganoxie players were also extremely active on the basepaths. Post 41 players stole six bases Tuesday night. Derek Erwin had three of them.
Post 41 also took advantage of six Legends errors. Tonganoxie didn’t commit any errors behind Waters.
“I really just had to let (catcher Jake) Heskett call it,” Waters said. “I think we can make it to the championship if we try. We have two more pitchers coming in (Logan Forbis and Erick Lowe), so that should be good.”
