Highway 7 resurfacing to begin

By Staff Report - | Jul 25, 2007

Commuters into the Kansas suburbs of Kansas City could face some delays beginning next week as resurfacing of part of an area highway gets under way.

Weather permitting, on Monday, July 30, a resurfacing will begin along Kansas Highway 7 from Kansas Highway 10 in Johnson County to north of Interstate 70 in Wyandotte County. Resurfacing work will also occur on various ramps and intersections along K-7.

Crews will work daily, Monday through Friday, with some Saturday work, from approximately 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., the Kansas Department of Transportation said in a news release.

The K-7 resurfacing project will smooth the road surface and fill cracks that can shorten pavement life. Crews will apply a thin layer of asphalt over special asphalt “glue” that binds the new asphalt overlay to the old pavement. This type of overlay promotes drainage, reducing hydroplaning, wet weather spray, and skidding, transportation officials said.

Traffic on K-7 will experience varying daily lane closures throughout the duration of the project. Lane and ramp closures also will occur as the project work moves along K-7.

Drivers should expect some minor delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes, if possible.

Hamm Inc. is the primary contractor for the $3.2 million project. The project is expected to be completed late this fall.
