Masons feed 100 for ‘Thanksgiving’

By Estuardo Garcia - | Nov 14, 2007

Thanksgiving is still more than a week away, but that didn’t stop the Masons from Henri Lodge 190 to celebrate a little early by feeding traditional holiday fare to community members.

Among some of the dishes there were marshmallow-topped sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans and, of course, turkey.

“We get tremendous support from the community and it only gets stronger,” said lodge member Terry Chowning. “This is our way to thank the community.”

This was the second year the Masons have prepared this free turkey dinner in Tonganoxie. On both occasions, Chowning said, several of the lodge members and their wives spent three to four days preparing the food for the feast.

Glenn Graves said he started taking reservations for the dinner a few weeks ago. He had reservations for about 30 guests, but near the end the group fed around 100 people.

The turkey dinner was also a way for the Masons to help others during the holiday season. It wasn’t necessary, but the Masons asked guest to donate nonperishable food items or money for the meal. The food donations and the $71 made from the dinner were given Monday to Tonganoxie’s Good Shepherd Thrift Store and Food Bank.

“We brought in several cases of food last year,” Graves said. “If that doesn’t put someone in the Christmas spirit, then they are a Scrooge.”
