THS runs against top-tier competition

By Eric Sorrentino - | Oct 3, 2007

Tonganoxie High cross country coach Phil Williams called Saturday’s Rim Rock Invitational the best competition the Chieftains have seen all season.

“It’s one of the biggest meets in the country,” Williams said. “We weren’t surprised at the competition at all.”

With that in mind, the Chieftains fared well at the race in Lawrence. The THS boys team finished sixth of 21 schools, while the girls finished ninth of 20 teams.

Junior Matt Brock had the most impressive THS showing of the day. The Cheiftain boys No. 1 runner finished fifth individually with a time of 17:48 in the 5K. Williams said in the last two races, Brock has really stepped up his game.

Brock finished fourth individually at the Sept. 24 Tonganoxie Invitational.

“He was disappointed with how last season finished,” Williams said of Brock. “He was injured the latter part of last year with a strained calf muscle. He seems to be healthy now and over that.”

The girls had consecutive finishes with freshman Alex Hauk and sophomore Andie Jeannin, who placed 20th and 21st, respectively. Hauk completed the 4K course in 16:58, while Jeannin ran it in 17:04.

Hauk beat her personal-best time of 17:07, which she posted at the Tonganoxie Invitational.

Jeannin also recorded her best time of the season by two seconds. She ran with a cast on her arm because of a fractured wrist for the second straight week.

“Andie’s really tough and strong mentally,” Williams said. “That’s what it takes under those conditions.”

The Chieftains will compete again Thursday at Mill Valley.
