THS volleyball opens with win at ‘tough venue’

By Eric Sorrentino - | Sep 5, 2007

The Tonganoxie High volleyball team defeated Holton Tuesday night in four games: 25-14, 22-25, 25-23 and 25-23.

The victory was especially sweet for the Chieftains since the Wildcats knocked them out of the Kansas Class 4A playoffs last season. On Tuesday night, Tonganoxie (1-0) defeated Holton at the same venue: Holton’s gymnasium.

“This was a place that we hadn’t had good memories,” THS co-coach Brandon Parker said. “We played a good team and a lot of people were cheering against us. It was a tough venue to play in, especially at the start of the year.”

Parker attributed the quick start in Game 1 to effective serving, particularly by senior Sami Franiuk.

Tonganoxie won’t have time to rest. The Chieftains arrived home late Tuesday night and will play host to their first home match tonight against the Baldwin Bulldogs. Game time has been moved from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for the varsity match.

With such little time to prepare for Baldwin, Parker said the short time between matches would benefit THS at the end of the season.

“There’s probably better situations, but we have to suck it up and play,” Parker said. “That’s just part of it. If you want to get wherever it is that you want to be at the end of the season, you have to play back-to-back-to-back. That’s just as tiring as what we’re doing tonight.”
