THS still winless after road trip to BSHS
Bonner Springs ? Bonner Springs clicked on both offense and defense in a 9-1 win against Tonganoxie in soccer competition Thursday at the Bonner Springs Field.
THS sophomore Tanner Newman scored the lone Chieftains goal early in the second half.
“We played well in the first 25 minutes of the second half, but then our lack of conditioning showed and we couldn’t get our legs under us very good,” Tonganoxie coach Ken Lott said. “We are a young team and just not there yet.”
Tonganoxie fell to 0-9 on the season.
It was Bonner Springs’ third straight win as it moved to 5-4. Bonner is unbeaten on the road at 4-0, but this was the Braves first home win of the season.
During the first 15 minutes of the game, senior Alex Perica scored two goals to set the tone for the night as Bonner jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
“Alex has been our finisher,” Bonner Springs coach Michael Moulin said. “But a lot of individuals have been giving him good balls and assists, too. It’s been a team effort and I have been pleased with the performance of the whole group.”
Perica has scored two goals in at least threef Bonner’s games this year.
“I am trying to help the team and do my job,” Perica said. “We are playing good and we have all been practicing the game.”
Bonner’s Garrett Parker and Seth Clements added a goal to help lead the Braves to a 4-0 cushion at halftime.
In the second half, Clayton McCully, Connor Harrington, Jason Hoskins and Michael Bille all scored goals for Bonner.
“Bonner has some quick strikers and they have a very good team,” Lott said.
During the last three games, Bonner junior goalie Ethan Isaacs has performed well, including a shutout of Lansing on Sept. 18.
Isaacs shared the credit for his improved play with the offense and the defense.
“Our defense has been talking more and working the goal more,” Isaacs said. “When offense is scoring, it helps the defense stay up.”
Tonganoxie’s next game will be at 6 p.m. today at Basehor-Linwood.
Notes: The Chieftains nearly pulled off their first victory of the season Monday at Perry-Lecompton, but fell, 2-1, to the Kaws.
