KVL Football Report: Week Five

By Chris Wristen - | Sep 29, 2007

One week remains until KSHSAA football district play begins, and right now the Kaw Valley League standings are dicey.

Four KVL teams – Lansing, Mill Valley, Bonner Springs and Perry-Lecompton – all are 4-1 and atop the league standings, but thus far nobody has locked up a piece of the KVL crown.

Bonner Springs upended previously unbeaten Mill Valley, 27-10, on Friday and forced the four-way mess at the top. Meanwhile, Lansing stayed in the hunt thanks to a three-touchdown effort by senior Justin Smith against a Basehor-Linwood club that looked poised to shock another league power. Remember, Basehor handed Perry its lone league loss earlier this season.

Piper and Bishop Ward aren’t out of the chase yet either. Both are 2-2, but both will play two league contests during district action in addition to KVL games this Friday.

Also on Friday night Tonganoxie, the defending KVL champion, picked up its first victory of the season when it slipped past Santa Fe Trail, 19-6.

The games to watch this week are the Mill Valley-Lansing matchup and the Perry-Lecompton contest with Piper.
