Our view: 4-H’ers’ actions show true spirit of county’s youths

By Staff | Apr 16, 2008

The 4-H club is known to have members who are very involved in various projects and activities.

On Saturday, that rang true again.

This time, it was a volunteer project in which members helped residents throughout the county who were unable to do chores themselves.

In all, 14 teams of 4-H’ers helped 30 residents throughout Leavenworth County with spring cleaning projects during the seventh annual Youth Service Day – on a day that was anything like spring.

Despite the winter weather in April, youths were out in full force helping county residents.

That’s an encouraging scene.

In an age when face-to-face interaction can be reduced because of the numerous video gaming systems that are available or the amount of time people spend listening to their MP3 players, communicating online on Facebook and MySpace, etc., it’s refreshing to see interaction such as this.

Volunteers even brought potted daisies and cards they signed to each of the residents.

Such a gesture can speak volumes.

For such action we have something to say as well: Thank you for lending a helping hand.

We hope paying it forward will one day come back to these young volunteers – several years down the road when another generation of 4-H’ers is continuing the volunteering tradition.
