Chieftains win two Sunday
The Tonganoxie Chieftains summer baseball team went 3-2 this weekend at a tournament in Lansing. After struggling in pool play Friday and Saturday, the Chieftains won two on Sunday in the consolation bracket.
Tonganoxie (6-8) opened up the weekend with a 4-2 victory against Silver Lake Friday afternoon. Jace Waters dominated, fanning 11. At the plate Waters went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
Saturday morning the Chieftains lost 3-0 to the Kansas Senators. Logan Forbis threw a complete game in the close setback and struck out 10 batters.
In the afternoon session, Tonganoxie lost to the Topeka Capitals, 7-2. Erick Lowe threw 5 2/3 innings in the defeat. The Chieftains led early in the game but fell behind and eventually surrendered a four-run sixth to the Capitals. Waters drove in both runs for Tonganoxie.
However, the Chieftains bounced back Sunday with a pair of victories. First, they again knocked off Silver Lake, this time by a score of 11-3 in a six-inning, run-rule affair. The Chieftains scored seven in the second inning to cruise to victory. Tyler Lupton, Logan Forbis and Ethan Lorance all registered two-RBI singles during the rally.
Immediately following the victory, Tonganoxie again took on the Capitals and exacted some revenge with an 11-6 victory. Coach Mitch Loomis said the team struggled defensively with five errors but responded well offensively.
The Chieftains are idle until July 1 when they travel to Lansing for a doubleheader. On July 2 they have another twinbill in Topeka against the Senators.
