Undefeated after two road games to start the season, the Tonganoxie High girls soccer team tasted defeat for the first time on Monday evening at Chieftain Park.
It didn’t go down well.
Visiting Mill Valley pasted the Chieftains, 10-0.
Time after time, the athletic and skilled Jaguars seemed to get to the ball before the Chieftains could check them.
MVHS bombarded THS goalkeeper Sarah Flaherty with shots and led 8-0 at the half.
“At halftime I told them if they couldn’t cover a player, to cover a space or the angles,” coach Ken Lott said. “Defensively we did better in the second half, too.”
Lott said it was the first time the Chieftains (2-1) had trailed in the young season and that proved to be a challenge on a cool, windy evening against a tough opponent.
“I think in the first half we kind of weren’t focused, weren’t sure what we were doing,” he said, pointing to a lack of concentration as a main reason for the lopsided defeat.
MVHS was on the attack for all 69 minutes of the contest that ended with more than 11 minutes on the clock because of the 10-goal spread. Lott said breakdowns in the THS midfield often made Chieftain defenders outnumbered.
The Chieftains are back on the road Thursday at 6 p.m. when they head to De Soto.
