De Soto's Jordin Burford hoists a three on Thursday night against Jeff West at the Tonganoxie Invitational. The Wildcats struggled from the perimeter and lost, 50-40.
Nearly half of De Soto High’s shot attempts Thursday night were hoisted from beyond the arc, but only three went through the net as the Wildcat girls lost their second straight game at the Tonganoxie Invitational, falling, 50-40, to Jeff West.
De Soto (2-8) went 0-for-17 from three-point range in the first half. It wasn’t until Shelbi Petty, who led DHS with 11 points, hit a trey in the third quarter that the team was able to cash in from downtown. De Soto hit three of its 32 long-range attempts and 15 of 66 field goals.
The Tigers’ Katie Bigham led all scorers with 18 points. Her teammates Taylor Jaimes and Audrey Mullins each grabbed nine rebounds. Jeff West went 18-for-41 from the floor.
De Soto’s Tami Crow and Kelsey Fisher connected on threes in the fourth quarter, but DHS wasn’t able to cut the deficit below eight as Jeff West (4-4) advanced to the consolation final.
Following Fisher’s three, which cut the deficit to 10, De Soto forced a turnover and Petty scored a layup with 1:28 remaining to make the score 46-38. The Wildcats then forced another turnover but were unable to capitalize with a bucket.
Jeff West will play Atchison, which defeated Don Bosco, 59-8, earlier Thursday, in the fifth-place game on Saturday at 10 a.m. AHS had three players — Lillian Cooper (12), Alanna Downing (11) and Courtney Calhoon (11) — score in double figures.
The Wildcats were scheduled to play in the seventh-place game of the invitational on Saturday morning, but tournament officials learned Thursday Don Bosco (Mo.) will not make the trip. De Soto’s next game will be Tuesday as the team plays host to Tonganoxie.

Boys consolation semifinals
In boys action Thursday at THS, Jeff West defeated Atchison, 61-49, and Silver Lake beat Don Bosco, 67-53.
Jeff West’s Cole Buckman had 19 points and five assists and his teammate Alex Baker had 14 points and seven rebounds.
Donovan Garrett of Don Bosco was exceptional in a losing cause, scoring 37 points on 17-for-29 shooting. Silver Lake’s Dustin Campbell led the Eagles with 19 points.
Jeff West will face Silver Lake Saturday in the fifth-place game. Don Bosco and Atchison will clash for seventh.
