Post 41 splits with Cubs

By Mirror Staff Reports - | Jul 13, 2009

Tonganoxie scored 26 runs in a Thursday doubleheader with the Lansing Cubs but only earned a split in Post 41’s final regular-season home games.

After pounding Lansing, 14-5, in the opener at Leavenworth County Fairgrounds, Tonganoxie fell behind early in the second game before rallying and coming up short, 14-12.

Jacob Stauch started on the mound and AJ Gilbert entered in relief to win the first game for Post 41 — 15-6 headed into its regular-season finale on Tuesday night at Lansing — as the entire lineup performed well at the plate.

The second contest, however, was a different story. Walks and errors in the first inning helped the Cubs score 11 times.

Eventually, the Post 41 players settled down and rallied to tie the game, 12-12, in the fourth inning. But Lansing scored twice more in the fifth and the game was called due to time.

Coach Pat Bailey said it was a minor setback that he hoped would serve as a valuable lesson.

“We are not good enough to just think all we have to do is show up to win,” he said. “We still have to play the game.”

Post 41 was scheduled to close its regular season on Sunday night but its games with the Lansing Reds were postponed due to wet field conditions.

Tonganoxie has wrapped up the No. 2 seed for its Post 23 League tournament, which gets under way Saturday. Post 41 will play at 8 p.m. at Leavenworth County Fairgrounds against the winner of a game between the Lansing Cubs and Geiger, which starts at 6 p.m.

Beginning on July 23 at Leavenworth, Tonganoxie’s zone tournament is next on the schedule. Post 41 will be battling with Geiger, the Lansing Cubs and Atchison for a spot in the state tournament. The top two teams at zone advance.
