NRA banquet set for March 21
The Leavenworth County Friends of NRA’s 11th annual banquet and fundraiser will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds administration building, 22618 McLouth Rd. in Tonganoxie.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for games and to review auction items. The banquet starts at 6:30 p.m. Auctions and drawings will follow the dinner. There will be more than 20 firearms to be won or purchased as well as more than $5,000 in other merchandise.
According to local event chairman, Larry Noell, nationally, the program has provided more than $100 million to fund youth-oriented firearms safety and education programs since its inception in 1993. In Kansas, the funding of 4-H and Boy Scout sport shooting programs have benefited the most, with hunter education, youth outdoor education events and JROTC programs also receiving substantial support. In 2009, grants totaling more than $100,000 are being awarded throughout Kansas with more than $8,000 returning to events and activities in Leavenworth County.
Noell also points out that while other conservation groups are habitat-oriented, this program works at getting the next generation involved in the hunting and shooting sports.
“We are trying to provide training and education opportunities for our young people and help to instill a sense of responsibility, while teaching discipline,” he said.
“The overwhelming majority of youth involved in tragic firearms incidents have never had proper safety training or been taught about the responsibilities that go with firearms ownership and usage.
“We encourage parents to get involved with their kids through the projects we fund. We want to get the kids and their parents outside and involved with wholesome and educational activities.”
The cost of tickets, which covers dinner, a chance for door prizes and admittance to the auctions and events, is $25 per person. Sponsorships are available in amounts from $75 to $7,500. Tickets must be purchased by March 16, as they will not be available at the door.
Any donated items for use as door prizes or drawings are greatly appreciated. Call Larry Noell at (913) 727-2966 for more information or to purchase tickets.
