THS girls lose by 2 at Mill Valley
Shawnee ? For the second time in a week, the Tonganoxie High girls basketball team lost by two points on the road.
The Chieftains were knocked off, 54-52, at Mill Valley Tuesday night after falling at Bishop Ward, 49-47, on Friday.
THS (6-13 overall, 4-8 Kaw Valley League) was down four points with 13.3 seconds left against the Jaguars, when coach Randy Kraft called a timeout.
Remarkably, Tonganoxie came out and ran the same play that almost tied the game at Ward on Friday. Senior guard Andie Jeannin drove in from the left wing and knocked down a jumper from about 10 feet out — nearly the same location she missed from at the buzzer four days earlier –with 11 seconds remaining.
Mill Valley (9-10, 6-5) then got the ball in to Emily Altman, who was fouled with 6.5 on the clock.
She missed the front end of a one-and-one and junior THS forward Danielle Miller snagged the defensive rebound.
Tonganoxie freshman guard Hannah Kemp quickly caught an outlet pass from Miller and dribbled up the right sideline before passing to sophomore guard Haley Smith.
Smith had knocked down two outside jumpers already and was poised to tie the game but Altman blocked Smith’s possible game-tying shot just before time expired.
The Jaguars’ Nicole Garretson (19 points) and Altman (16) combined to score 65 percent of Mill Valley’s points.
THS freshman Jenny Whitledge led her team with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Senior guard Lauren Hall, who buried three three-pointers, scored 11.
The Chieftains close their regular season on Friday with a 6 p.m. home tip against Piper.
