Tonganoxie High senior Dylan Puhr hits a single in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday against Basehor-Linwood. The Chieftains lost both games of a home doubleheader against BLHS.

Tonganoxie High’s baseball team couldn’t find its first win of the young season Thursday against Basehor-Linwood.

The Chieftains followed an eight-inning 8-7 loss to their rivals with an 8-2 setback at Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.

In need of a run to stay alive in the opener’s extra inning, THS (0-4) came up short in the bottom of the eighth.

After pop-ups by Austin Harkrader and Corey Klinkenberg to start the last stand, Shane Levy, Jeremy Carlisle and Ethan Lorance drew three straight walks to load the bases for Ben Williams, who struck a high fly ball to center field to end the game.

Relief pitcher Lorance fanned three Basehor batters in the top of the eighth, but also gave up a walk and what proved to be the game-winning RBI-double.

The Bobcats were two outs away from winning — and avoiding an extra inning — in the bottom of the seventh, but with two outs, Tonganoxie put together a rally.

Williams drew a walk with one out and advanced to second on a passed ball before being replaced on the base paths by pinch runner Shawn Marin.

With the tying run in scoring position, Jeremy Wagner delivered an RBI-single to center field to tie the game at 7-7.

Dylan Puhr kept the inning alive with a single to right field but Tyler Freeman hit a groundball that BLHS turned into a double play.

Down a run entering the seventh, Lorance was able to hold BLHS scoreless in the top half of the inning, when he struck out two batters.

THS took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Carlisle, who stole second base on a pick-off attempt, was driven in by Lorance, who later scored on a Williams sacrifice fly.

In Game 2, Tonganoxie trailed 5-1 entering the bottom of the fifth and appeared to be ready for another rally.

Freeman led off the fifth with a walk and after a Dylan Fosdick single, Austin Harkrader loaded the bases with another walk.

Though Levy struck out with three runners on, Carlisle knocked an RBI-single to center field to cut the Chieftains’ deficit to three runs.

THS had the go-ahead run at the plate when Lorance came up with the bases still loaded and he hit a high pop-up to second base that brought on the infield fly rule. When the BLHS second baseman dropped the ball, Tonganoxie’s runners tried to advance and Carlisle was tagged out at second base.

The Bobcats scored three more runs in the top of the seventh to put the second game out of reach.

The Chieftains have their first road games of the season at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, when they take on Jeff West in a doubleheader.
