Abdallah Shrine Rodeo returning to Leavenworth County Fairgrounds

By Staff Report - | May 10, 2011

The Shrine Rodeo has been a tradition for the past 52 years. In this photo from a previous Shrine Rodeo, a bareback rider stays on his bronco for 8 seconds. This year’s Shrine Rodeo is May 26-28 at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds in Tonganoxie.

A tradition is under way in northeast Kansas.

For more than a half-century, the Abdallah Shriners have played host to the annual Shrine Rodeo, and this year’s event will take place May 26-28 in Tonganoxie at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.

The professional rodeo begins at 7:30 p.m. each night and features rodeo competition (bareback and saddle bronc riding, bull riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing and roping), plus rodeo clowns, bullfighters and entertainment.

A craft show will take place all three nights of the rodeo. A car show will take place noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 28 on the grounds.

Adult tickets are $12 and admission for youth ages 6-12 is $4.

“A lot of us have families and we realize the cost it takes for entertainment, so we try hard to keep ticket prices low,” said Jason Cooper, rodeo production manager. “We’re offering our Family Fun Packs again, where $30 gets a person two adult tickets, two kid tickets, four hot dogs and four soda pops. We don’t want families to break the bank to come to our rodeo.”

The Family Fun Pack for $30 price is good through May 20. After that date, the price goes to $40.

The rodeo begins at 7:30 pm on May 26, 27 and 28. Vendors will be on the grounds and parking costs $3, which includes a free rodeo program.
