Sub-state hoops brackets to be released Feb. 22

By Justin Nutter - | Feb 14, 2012

As Tonganoxie and McLouth enter the home stretch of their respective basketball schedules, both are beginning preparation for 2012 sub-state tournament action.

Tonganoxie is set to compete in the Bonner Springs sub-state bracket. The Chieftain girls, who entered the week at 11-5, will see a tournament field highlighted by No. 4 Bonner Springs and 2011 state participant Basehor-Linwood. The THS boys (8-8) face a field that includes No. 4 Basehor-Linwood and a 2011 state semifinalist, No. 6 Topeka-Hayden.

The Class 4A state tournament will be played March 7-10 in Salina. Sumner Academy won last year’s boys tournament, while Holton claimed the girls crown.

McLouth will participate in the St. Marys sub-state bracket. The Bulldog girls (3-11) face a field that includes No. 1 Riley County — a state qualifier last season — and No. 8 Silver Lake. The MHS boys (9-7) also have two top-10 opponents in their bracket, including No. 5 Rock Creek and No. 6 Osage City. Rossville, a state participant last season, is in the field as well.

The Class 3A state tournament will take place March 7-10 in Hutchinson. Scott City enters as the defending boys champ, while Wichita Collegiate is out for a repeat in the girls competition.

Seeding will be completed and brackets will be released after 3 p.m. on Feb. 22. Quarterfinal games will be played at the higher seed on Feb. 27 (boys Class 3A, girls Class 4A) and Feb. 28 (girls Class 3A, boys Class 4A). Semifinals will begin at the primary tournament sites on March 1 and 2 in the same order.
