Five Chieftain wrestlers in regional finals

By Justin Nutter - | Feb 17, 2012

Five Chieftain wrestlers earned spots in the regional finals Friday at Spring Hill and will compete for gold medals in their respective weight classes when action resumes Saturday.

Sophomore Clayton Himpel (120), senior Caleb Himpel (126), sophomore Joe Wolf (132), freshman Asher Huseman (138) and senior Matt Soetaert (152) went undefeated during Friday’s competition. All will finish in the top-four of their weight classes, so they have already qualified for the Class 4A state tournament, which will take place Feb. 24-25 in Salina.

Five Chieftains can join the list of state qualifiers with one more win. Freshman Dalton Tavis (113), senior Adam Thomas (145), junior Julius Coats (182), junior Thomas Miller (195) and sophomore Zeke Kissinger (220) each suffered losses in the third round, but can advance to the third-place match with one more victory. Their opponents are yet to be determined.

The remaining three Chieftains aren’t eliminated from state contention, but each must win three matches to earn a spot in the third-place match. That list includes sophomore Luke Carey (160), senior Ryan Lynch (170) and junior Ty Barton (285).

After one day of competition, No. 10 THS holds a slim lead in the overall team standings. The Chieftains have 129 total points, giving them a 4.5 point advantage over No. 5 Bonner Springs. Complete team standings, as well as each THS wrestler’s next opponent, can be found below.

Saturday’s action will begin at 11 a.m. Check The Mirror’s website and Facebook page for tournament updates throughout the day.
