5 Questions: Tracking credit

By Staff Report - | Jan 18, 2012

Debra Wood, family and consumer sciences agent with the Kansas State Extension Service — Geary County, offers this advice to be sure your credit report is up to date and accurate.

Q: What is the importance of checking my credit report?

A: Because the information in your credit report is used to evaluate your applications for credit, insurance, employment, and renting a residence, you should be sure the information is accurate and up-to-date.

In addition, monitoring your credit is one of the best ways to spot identity theft.

Q: How often should I check my credit report?

A: Check your credit report at least once a year to correct errors and detect unauthorized activity.

Q: How can I get a copy of my credit report?

A: You can request your free report online, by phone or by mail.

Visit AnnualCreditReport.com; call 1-877-322-8228; or fill out and mail in the Annual Credit Report Request form available on the website.

Q: What is AnnualCredit Report.com?

A: This central site allows you to request a free credit file disclosure, commonly called a credit report, once every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

Q: Should I get all the report from all three companies at once?

A: By requesting the reports separately, for example, one every four months, you can monitor your credit more frequently throughout the year. Set a calendar reminder for yourself to ensure this is accomplished.
