City council hears about business needs

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jan 31, 2012

Better communication needs to be paramount among Tonganoxie businesses and groups promoting those businesses.

That was the consensus among people who attended a work session Monday in council chambers.

Roughly 35 people attended the meeting, which brought together the Tonganoxie Retail/Commercial Development Committee, Tonganoxie Chamber of Commerce, Tonganoxie business owners and other residents.

Mayor Jason Ward has incorporated quarterly gatherings with various groups called Progress Tonganoxie in which residents meet with the council to share information about their groups. The meeting generally takes place before a regular council meeting, but Monday’s meeting stood alone as a work session that lasted about two hours.

Those in attendance spoke about having better communication among businesses and the Chamber of Commerce, as well as the RCDC. The city funds the retail committee, which works to promote existing business and attract new business to Tonganoxie.

The group also made lists of what the community does well, what can be improved and how to solve those issues.
