As it has all season, Tongie utilized its strength in numbers. Turner was without several of its swimmers due to the holiday weekend, and those who made the trip only competed in two to three events each. Tongie took advantage, particularly in relay competitions, where it won nearly every race in every age division.

“We were ready to go,” coach Janet Falk said. “We felt like we had really been pushing hard. We had far fewer disqualifications at this meet than we had at any of our previous meets.”

The win was the second of the season for the Tidal Waves and their first since defeating Bonner Springs in the season opener on June 8.

Abby Frye and Zeb Huseman, who both competed in their respective 12-and-under divisions, led the Tidal Waves with four first-place finishes each in individual races. Both swimmers bested the field in the freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and individual medley. Mikayla Rhoads (8-and-under) was the only other Tongie swimmer to win multiple events. She won the freestyle and individual medley.

With regular season competition now completed, Tongie has its sights set on the Eastern Kansas Swim League championships, which it will host on Friday. Preliminaries began Tuesday with ages 11 and up and will wrap up today with ages 10 and younger. The top 12 swimmers in each event will earn a spot in the championships, which begin at 8 a.m. Friday. Two alternates will also be selected fore each event. Relay races are open to all swimmers.

Falk said last week’s victory likely will give Tonganoxie swimmers an extra boost going into this week’s finals, to which Tonganoxie is playing host for the first time in program history.

“It gives them momentum because they’ve got the confidence to swim those tougher strokes,” she said. “We’ll have close to 70 swimmers. We’re going to swim them in their strongest strokes to they’re more likely to qualify.”
