Cranor said that about 8:30 p.m., a Leavenworth area man forced his way in the front door of a home in the 25000 block of 164th Street. Once in the living room, the man shot one resident in the chest with a handgun. Cranor said 66-year-old John J. O’Brien died at the scene.

Officers believe the suspect was looking for O’Brien’s daughter, who also lived at the home.

O’Brien’s wife, Benita, 57, fled the house without suffering any physical injuries. The couple’s daughter, 39-year-old Stacey O’Brien, suffered a head injury when she was struck with the gun, Cranor said, but she then fled the house. She was treated and released from an area hospital.

The suspect was found dead at the scene, the undersheriff said.

“He had apparently shot himself outside the residence,” Cranor said.

Sheriff’s officials Thursday morning had not yet released the name and age of the suspect.
