THS grad Wolken signs with Indiana State

By Justin Nutter - | Apr 19, 2013

Kaitlyn Wolken, a 2011 Tonganoxie High grad and current sophomore at Butler Community College, will continue her softball career next year at Indiana State University.

Two years ago, 2011 Tonganoxie High grad Kaitlyn Wolken guaranteed she’d play softball at the collegiate level when she signed with Butler Community College. Earlier this week, she made sure the journey would continue to the Division I level.

Now a sophomore infielder at Butler, Wolken will continue her career next season at Indiana State University. She signed a national letter of intent with the Sycamores on Thursday.

Wolken has helped the Grizzlies reach new heights in her sophomore campaign, including the first No. 1 national ranking in school history. The team is currently 39-2 this season, including a 10-0 mark in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference, and sits atop the NJCAA polls.

Despite playing on a team littered with strong hitters, Wolken is at or near the top of several offensive categories. In 40 games played, she’s hit .440 with 12 doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 48 runs batted in. She owns a .504 on-base percentage and has struck out just five times in 109 at-bats.

The Grizzlies have eight games remaining before the start of postseason play. They’ll continue their season Saturday with a home doubleheader against Garden City Community College.

Wolken will join an Indiana State squad that is currently 14-28 this season. The Sycamores have 11 regular season games remaining.

As a senior at THS, Wolken earned an All-Kaw Valley League first-team selection. She helped the Chieftains to an 11-11 record in her final season, which ended just one run short of a bid to the Class 4A state tournament.
