THS baseball ousted at Hayden

By Mirror Staff Report - | May 14, 2013

The Tonganoxie High baseball team hung tough against one of the state’s top teams on Monday, but saw its season come to a close with a 6-4 loss in its regional opener at No. 4 Topeka-Hayden.

The Chieftains (6-11) loaded the bases in the top of the first, and they cashed in when junior Travis Woods hit a three-run double into right field. The 3-0 advantage stayed intact until the Wildcats answered with three of their own in the bottom of the fourth.

THS briefly regained the lead on an RBI triple by junior Shane Levy in the fifth, but Hayden took its first lead of the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. The Chieftains couldn’t generate any late offense, as they managed just one hit in the final two innings. Hayden tacked on another run in the sixth for the final margin of victory.

Woods went the distance on the pitcher’s mound, but allowed six runs — five of them earned — on 13 hits. He struck out one and walked one in the losing effort.

Levy’s triple and Woods’ double were the team’s only extra-base hits. Woods added a fourth-inning single to give THS its only multi-hit performance.
