Sub-state volleyball destinations announced

By Staff Report - | Oct 15, 2013

Local volleyball teams learned their sub-state destinations last week when locations were released by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.

For the second straight year, Tonganoxie will serve as a host school. The Chieftains will welcome Class 4A-I opponents Basehor-Linwood, Piper and Sumner Academy to their home floor for the tournament. All four schools were in the THS sub-state bracket a year ago. Basehor-Linwood defeated THS to advance to the state tournament.

Meanwhile, Bonner Springs will travel to De Soto, where it will see host school DHS, Bishop Miege and Spring Hill. The Braves were in the Tonganoxie sub-state field a year ago.

The four-team sub-state brackets are a product of the Class 4A split, which went into effect this year for volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball. Both 4A state tournaments will take place in the Salina Bicentennial Center.

McLouth will compete in an eight-team Class 2A sub-state bracket at Valley Falls, which includes Jackson Heights, Bishop Seabury, Leavenworth-Immaculata, Olathe-Heritage Christian, Maranatha Academy, Troy, Jefferson County North and VFHS. The winner will advance to the 2A state tournament in Emporia’s White Auditorium. The Bulldogs traveled to Immaculata for last year’s sub-state tourney.

All sub-state tournaments will take place no later than 1 p.m. Oct. 26. Tournaments will be seeded Oct. 23 and brackets will be posted as soon as they are received.
