Campbell wins medal at AAU Junior Olympics

By Justin Nutter - | Aug 5, 2014

Emma Campbell accomplished multiple personal goals during the weekend, improving two event times and earning an individual medal at the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics.

Campbell, an incoming freshman at Tonganoxie High, competed individually in the girls 14-year-old 3,000-meter run at the national meet at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. She took eighth in the 3,000 with a time of 11:34.38 — a full 26 seconds better than her regional qualifying time.

Additionally, Campbell ran with Audrey Smith, Cierra Hamlin and Kate Allen in the 4×800-meter relay in the same age division. The group, which represented the 365 Blaze Track Club, took 10th with a time of 10:36.07, shaving more than 10 seconds off its time at regionals. Allen replaced Natalie Smith on a team that had only run together twice before nationals.

Campbell had family members in attendance, as her father, Mark, is from Des Moines and still has relatives in the area. Campbell will now shift her focus to the Chieftain cross country team, which officially opens practice Aug. 18.
