What’s your bid, Tonganoxie?

By Shawn Linenberger - | Dec 3, 2014

Even Elsa and Anna are getting into the decorating spirit at the Tonganoxie Public Library.

The characters from “Frozen” have a tree on display as part of the library’s Festival of Mini Trees.

OK, so the characters didn’t actually put a tree together. Library staff created a few trees based on various book characters and gave those characters attribution.

Other characters represented are Little Bear, Hank the Cowdog , Horton and Judy Moody, with help from Stink.

“We enjoyed decorating the trees on behalf of the book characters,” director Cindy Grant said with a laugh.

It’s been a few years since the miniature trees have graced the bookshelves at the library.

Grant said library staff members were brainstorming about programs that were really popular with patrons.

She noted that decorating for Christmas and food were popular topics that came up. The food will be prevalent starting next month with the winter reading program, which last year centered around food in different ways. The popular program will return starting next month.

As for the miniature trees, the silent auction is a way for the community to get involved and also provide a fundraiser for the library.

In total, there were 15 trees on display as of Tuesday.

Anyone else interested in putting a tree together can drop it by through Saturday.

Bidding will be available through Dec. 13. To bid, patrons can ask at the front desk for the auction lists that match up with the miniature trees.

Here’s a description of each of the trees on display so far:

• Prairie du Kanza, patriotic theme with various American flags and other decorations.

• City of Angels, white Tootsie Roll tree.

• First State Bank and Trust, lipstick and jewelry theme.

• Good Shepherd Thrift Shop and Food Bank, pine cones, ribbons and other decorations.

• Horton and his friends (library), silver and snowflake theme.

• Kathy Link, bright green, pink and purple tree with various decorations.

• Wizard of Paws, dog and cat ornaments adorn the tree.

• Judy Moody with help from Stink (library), turquoise, blue and pink decorations.

• Little Bear (library), a tree with silver and owl ornaments.

• Hank the Cowdog (library), swowmen and candy canes.

• Tonganoxie USD 464 school volunteers, ice skating theme.

• Denise Bixby, very miniature tree with tiny candy canes and other ornaments.

• Boy Scout Troop 357, silver and red decorations.

• Andy and Jami Burke, red and green decorations.

• Elsa and Anna (library), “Frozen” theme.

Auction winners will be notified by email and/or phone.

Here are some additional notes about the festival:

l Artificial trees must be between 2 and 3 feet tall, so that they may fit atop bookshelves.

l Any lights should be battery operated. The trees will be displayed with the lights on during the opening reception only. Thereafter they will be displayed with the lights off.

l Organizers ask that the trees be brought in pre-decorated and fully assembled, with all decorations securely fastened and on a free-standing base.
