Tonganoxie jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings and held on for a 6-2 victory against Basehor in K-7 baseball action Wednesday at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.
Looking to cap off a two-game sweep after a 9-7 win June 18 at Basehor, Tonganoxie (6-5) grabbed control in Wednesday’s rematch with a three-run second inning. Tonganoxie added one more in the third when Justin Wagner reached on an error and scored. Basehor (3-9) cut the lead in half with a two-run home run by Jake Vestal in the top of the fourth, but that’s all the offense it could muster.
The score remained 4-2 until Tonganoxie tacked on two more in the eighth, then Ty Hampton worked around two hit batters to close things out in the ninth.
Starter Logan Woods gave up just two runs in four innings, and Justyn Leslie added four scoreless frames in relief. AJ McClarrinon and Jesse Smallwood each saw time on the mound for Basehor.
Both teams have two outings scheduled for next week. Tonganoxie will host Turner for a single game Tuesday, then travel Wednesday to Eudora for a doubleheader. Meanwhile, Basehor will host Eudora for a single game Tuesday and Lansing for a doubleheader Wednesday.
