Tonganoxie church offers after-school program
A Tonganoxie church is offering an after-school program for a second year.
The Good News Club began with the start of the school year. It meets Monday afternoons at Cornerstone Family Worship, 128 E. Sixth St.
“We just want to be able to reach the kids in the community and have something for them that was a good program for them to go to after school,” said Angie Ketcham, children’s pastor at Cornerstone.
Children are picked up after school and bussed to the church.
“We have a snack and then play some games and have outside time if possible to burn some energy up,” Ketcham said. “And then we come back in and have time for singing songs and usually have a story and interactive puppets.”
The club runs from 3:45-5:15 p.m. on Mondays when school is in session and usually has between 15 and 20 youths. It’s open to students in kindergarten through fourth grade. Anyone from the community interested in volunteering can apply with Ketcham.
She said more children are welcome to join the group. Church officials run background checks on all of prospective volunteers and have junior helpers.
Ketcham said anyone could apply to assist with the after-school program.
“The workers don’t have to be from our church,” Ketcham said.
The Good News Club is a ministry of the Child Evangelism Fellowship, which is based out of Warrenton, Mo., outside of St. Louis.
