Tonganoxie High Soccer gets back on track with victory against St. Mary’s Academy
A few days removed from Monday’s loss to Mill Valley, the Tonganoxie High soccer team had another slow start against St. Mary’s Academy on Thursday night in its 4-2 victory.
The Chieftains fell behind 2-0 less than 10 minutes into the game. The first SMA goal came when the middle was left wide open as THS’ stopper was pushed way up and SMA’s Anthony VanderPutten was able to counter. The second came when Chieftain goalie Alex Kroll tried to clear the ball, but it was blocked and fell onto the foot of Ambrose Kramer, who passed the ball into the back of the net.
And then the floodgates opened.
Logan Williams scored the game-winner less than five minutes into the second half. The build-up to the goal included six passes outside of the box before it settled onto Williams’ foot.
The Chieftains were sluggish for the first 30 minutes of the game, and then found their momentum. Instead of playing up the middle and waiting for the ball to come to them, they started to swing it out wide. They attacked the ball, winning 50-50 balls.
Jay Willcutt ran onto a ball played over the top leaving him a one-on-one with the SMA keeper with less than seven minutes left. He took a few dribbles and slotted the ball to the left corner, cutting the deficit in half.
Dawson Jones pulled the Chieftains level 17 seconds before the end of the first half.
Tyler Novotney added insurance with 30 minutes to play in the second half.
Tonganoxie is back in action Friday against Maranatha Christian Academy.
