Tonganoxie Elementary School class incorporates Chicago Cubs into writing exercise

By Shawn Linenberger - | Nov 4, 2016

The Chicago Cubs’ postseason run and eventual ending of the nation’s longest championship drought has caught the attention of many from coast to coast.

At Tonganoxie Elementary School, some kindergarten students also got involved.

Tiffany Parker’s class had three different class exercises incorporating the World Series champions.

Students recreated the Cubs logo and wrote some accompanying sentences Tuesday and then drew the Cubs’ famous “W” flag (Wrigley Field flies either a “W” flag or “L” flag to correspond with a Cubs win or loss for that day) the next day. On Thursday, Parker had the students draw a championship trophy, again with sentences.

She said the exercise was designed to help the children work on sight words, as in words they recognize and can spell by seeing them.

Parker herself originally is from the Chicago area.

The Cubs, representing the National League, defeated Cleveland in seven games in the World Series. The Cubs hadn’t won a World Series since 1908. The Cleveland Indians now have the longest championship drought of any professional sports team. Their last title came in 1948.

The Cubs were down, 3-1, in the World Series before winning Game 5 in Chicago and then Game 6 and Game 7 in Cleveland.

On Wednesday, in Game 7, Chicago blew a 6-3 lead before a rain delay postponed the game for a bit. Then, in extra innings, the Cubs scored and held on for an 8-7 victory.

Former Kansas City Royal Ben Zobrist, who helped KC win its first World Series since 1985 last year, did the same for Chicago this year and was named World Series MVP.
