Plein Arts event next week in Tonganoxie
Tonganoxie Arts Council will have its Plein Art Painting Event next week.
This year’s Plein Art festival will be May 4-6. Artists will do paint-outs in six different categories. There also will be gallery sales, judging and an awards ceremony.
Registration for artists is $40 and will take place 7 a.m.-5 p.m. each day at Coffman ArtWorks Murals and Fine Art, 420 E. Fourth St.
Artists will create works in six categories in the Tonganoxie area: Spring Flowers, sponsored by The Beauty Bar; Lake Life, sponsored by Kelly Law Office; Tongie Life, sponsored by First State Bank and Trust; Nooks and Crannies, sponsored by Evans Real Estate; Farm Life, sponsored by Lynch Real Estate; and Night Light, sponsored by Midwest Chiropractic.
For Spring Flowers, painters will paint their interpretation of new spring flowers, while Lake Life will focus on Leavenworth County State Fishing Lake. Tongie Life will be an interpretation of small-town life and Nooks and Crannies will be just that: local nooks and crannies. Same goes for Farm Life and Night Light will focus on Kansas sunsets.
A $300 prize will be awarded in each category. Winners will be chosen by the sponsor of each category. In addition, a Best in Show prize of $400 will be awarded. The Best in Show painting will become next year’s commemorative print.
Judging will take place at 4 p.m. May 6. The award ceremony will be 6 p.m. May 6 on the patio between Coffman Artworks and 1866 Bar and Grill. A light supper will be served.
The entries will be for sale at Coffman Artworks that night and throughout the following week. The Tonganoxie Arts Council will retain a 20% commission on all sales.
TAC started an art festival a few years ago, but for the first time is separating events out among three different weekends in the spring.
The Tonganoxie Children’s Storytelling Festival was March 9 at Tonganoxie Elementary School. This marked the first year the festival, in its third year, took place at TES. Professional storytellers, authors and illustrators visited the school for the festival.
The final event of the series will be the Tonganoxie Arts Festival in June.
This year’s festival will be 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. June 10 and will take place in conjunction with the VFW Car Show at VFW Park, 900 E. First St.
Featured this year will be art vendors and music and food to complement the car show. The festival is open to all ages.
