The investigation regarding a fatal officer-involved shooting that happened on Jan. 6 in Leavenworth County has concluded.

Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson has completed his review of audio, video and written reports of the incident and determined the officers involved acted in self-defense. No charges will be filed.

“Sadly, this appears to be a case of suicide by a cop,” Thompson said. “Instances like these are unfortunate; officers go to work every day, hoping they don’t have to use any type of force, yet they remain prepared to do so when necessary.”

Suicide by cop, also known as suicide by police or law-enforcement-assisted suicide, is a suicide method in which a suicidal individual deliberately behaves in a threatening manner, with the intent to provoke a lethal response from a public safety or law enforcement officer to end their own life.
